@Libby:

Thanks for the kind words - I'm glad you got the connection to the anti-drug campaign :)

I like the word you used "reason". That's a good word. It's all about being reasonable when it comes to social networking.

@Trisha:

Wow, then I must be insulting a lot of people. I don't take my queues on how I operate on ANYTHING from what other people think. But, hey, that's just me. If I find you interesting, I'll follow you, if not, so sorry. I have to do what's best for me, ya know?

The rule for social media is genuine reciprocity -- not obligated reciprocity.

Thanks to you both for reading and commenting,

Lena

I absolutely loved the title! "This is your brain on social media" is very much similar to the 1990s "this is your brain on drugs" campaign... both can leave you feeling like you've scrambled your brain. Social media can be very time consuming and even an obsession. My name is Libby, and I am a facebook junkie. (And if facebook isn't your "drug" of choice then its Linkedln, Twitter, MySpace or something else.) Social media can be a distraction and a waste of time. I thought this article did a great job of helping realize the time, effort, and reason an individual may put into social media and how to better utilize and enjoy your time.

Really great article and you are SO right! The thing is, if someone finds you important and 'follows' you and you dont follow them, i often hear feedback that its insulting. I personally dont want to feel obligated to follow those that want to read my info. Much like, i cant visit every blogger that comes to my blog, but i do visit and comment those that interest me, kwim? I just dont think reciprocating everything is possible.
