Shoes
April 19, 2004
The following comment from Joanne Bradford, chief media revenue officer at MSN, supports so much of what Dickless Marketing has been saying all along: When asked in an interview by ClickZ's, Zachary Rodgers (Questions for MSN's Joanne Bradford/ April 14, 2004) to describe a day in her life, Ms. Bradford answered, "It's never the same. That's the beauty of it. I can be in meetings at Microsoft all day, I've done as many as 13 customer meetings in a day. I've had four lunches in a day. I work out. I have two children, 5 and 10. I like to buy shoes, for other people and for myself. I bought shoes for my entire sales support team. I might move on to handbags, I'm not sure yet."
What else is there to say? Go, Joanne!
At ABCNews.com , the final issue of "Wired Women," a commentary written by Dianne Lynch (May 2003) titled "Moms Online" said that, "Women in the industry [technology] said they're seen as less knowledgeable or qualified than their male colleagues. They attributed women's success to skill, education, and access to female mentors."
"Moms Online" was written nearly a year ago. We've traveled miles down that road now. Today's women are accomplishing things our mothers only dreamed of. Just as our mothers accomplished things their mothers only dreamed of. The excitement is in knowing that today, in this road-runner world, in this bits and bytes universe, we are not alone. We have women mentors--indeed. But we also have men who are cheering us on with vigor and excitement not because they're related to us, or because we owe them money. They're in the front lines holding our hands, asking our advice, and recognizing our power--without feeing threatened by it because we are colleagues first, and women, second.
The glass ceiling may still be casting shadows, but few women I talk to think they have to throw hammers at it to break it. We know it's slipping because of women like Joanne Bradford. Joanne Bradford, a woman who achieved her position of power in Microsoft using education and skill, and yet, the woman in her is still hung up on buying shoes! Gosh it's great to be female!
What's not to like about that!
