Smart Marketing to Women Online: Which color suits?
June 01, 2006
Marketing to Women Online - it's a fascinating and innovative activity. As I told the audience on Wednesday in Toronto, marketing to women online or off is a global activity - you cannot market to just ONE woman. However, you need to remember that EACH woman will impact your brand individually. Because...we can. Because...we are fiercely independent creatures. And because...we blog.
Speaking of blogs...I discovered a new blog aimed at the women's market, just recently. I guess 'discovered' isn't the right word. Truth is, Meg wrote to me and asked me to look over her little blog/site and give her my feedback. Unless a client is actually paying for a website/blog review, I hesitate to do more than give a thumbs up or thumbs down - since there could be dozens of wonderful things about a blog or website, and yet...have it fail the female-friendly test. This time, I couldn't resist, however. Meg has a site about...make-up. It's not technically a blog...I mean, there aren't comments and trackbacks...until you get into the reviews.
The site isn't just about make-up, Meg's Make-up Review actually does product reviews on make-up. To quote Meg, " I started the site when I went online to see if a certain product was reviewed. While I did find reviews, I knew nothing about the reviewer. Maybe she had oily skin? Maybe it doesn't work on frizzy hair. The reviewers age and other preferences were a mystery to me so I wasn't sure whose advice to take.
"I contacted the make-up PR reps and ask for them to send product for an honest review. [At Meg's] we do not take any advertising money from cosmetic companies but have links where people can buy the product and have affiliate programs set-up if they like what they read."
Meg just proves that women are innovative to the moon! And, Meg's Make-up Review is an A+ to me. I often criticize folks for using too much pink - after all, not all women like pink. But, Meg knows just how much to use and she uses it well. The site has plenty of whitespace so we aren't overwhelmed with content - graphically or textually.
I'm also impressed with the cartoon icons of of women putting make-up on - all the differing parts of our bodies that we adorn with color and scent, like lips, eyes, and body. I'm personally lusting after the Liquid Liner in "Lace Diamonds" from make-up artist, Diane Brill. According to Meg, she (Diane) is a celebrity of sorts. Now...I would never have known that if I hadn't clicked through Meg's site! (Ok, I still don't really know who Diane Brill is but...this site has convinced me I can trust Meg...so, if she says Diane Brill is "the Grand Dame" I believe her!)
And when I saw Cat Cosmetics...I went wild! Then, when I clicked it, and it took me to a site by Catherine Hickland - one of my favorite actresses (next to Susan Lucci), all I could do was purr! Really now - you can't blame me. I'm no Cleopatra, but...I do like cats, and make-up is a serious part of my world, so...I have to say, thank you, Meg. Thank you for giving us make-up reviews and a link to Cat's so kewl site! Meow! (just keep your kids away from this page...it's too dangerous for words!)
The site includes reviews from a number of other women, than Meg. And a sign-up button, presumably for other women to join in the review process. Sounds like a winner to me! But, of course, I've been a make-up freak since I was 12. I try very hard these days to remember less is more (at least, when you're over a certain age, and all). My strongest goal was to have cat's eyes - big, dark, and mysterious. When I saw the link on Meg's site to
Meg, keep those great reviews coming. And please, update your cocktail hour. Don't hold anything back! We want to hear the gossip! Else...we'll all think you're hiding something from us. You wouldn't do that, would you? [ALL images borrowed from Meg's site - theyare copyrighted and belong to her, please do not use them without permission].
Thanks for sharing the link and your insights about the blog. I am someone who is almost clueless about make-up and would need to read something like that :)
