Stop the World - The Baby's Crying!
March 11, 2009
Our designer, Karin, has been trying to adopt a baby from China. She has all the ups and downs on her neat blog, A Garden Variety Family. You can see by the beauty of the blog that she is a fantastic graphic designer.
Well, this story is her story and it's important because of all the things we have in this world, nothing is more important or more valuable than family. Family is defined differently, for different people, and in different cultures, but the very foundation of "family" comes from the connection people make with each other. Generally, the connection involves a Mom and a Dad and a baby, or two. Sometimes there are two Moms or two Dads, or the family consists of several generations - including Aunts and Uncles, and even...neighbors.
This family story involves the arrival of a very special baby. It goes like this, Karin called our offices three weeks ago to announce (suddenly and breathlessly and totally unexpectedly), "I'm going on maternity leave."
Since I had answered the phone, I was at a loss to reply. Knowing she had been on her way to a local adoption agency...since her plans for the baby from China were stretching into more than 2 years of waiting...I could not fathom what she meant by, "I'm officially going on maternity leave." (forgot the 'official' in my first mention)
"What does that mean?" I said...a bit hesitantly. I mean - really - I had no idea what to expect. All sorts of things were flying around my head - none of them even close to the reality.
"We're on our way to pick up our baby," she told me.
And, that's what she did. This is not my story to tell...so I will not go on. I mention it here because this wonderful event was a surprise to all of us, but most of all to Karin and her husband Steve. They are the proud parents of a newborn baby boy - and going through all the excitement, sleepless nights, and work that having a newborn involves.
There are no words of joy that can describe this to others. But, those of us who value family above all else - understand. If those of you who would market to us can grasp this overwhelming sense of joy and awe - you are well on your way to reaching us. It's been said that if you really want to sell something use a baby or a puppy/kitten.
I cannot disagree with that. No one can.
Happy Mother's Day, a little early, Karin.
This is such a beautiful story Yvonne; it almost brought a tear to my eye. I don't even know Karin, yet I'm soooo happy for her!!! I wish her all the best as she rejoices in the beauty a child can bring to your life :-)
