Over 50 Doesn't Mean Over It All
June 11, 2009
The phrase is, if I remember correctly, "over the hill," which is what young'uns think we are as soon as we hit 40 or 50...but I beg to differ. Being over 50 doesn't mean being over...the hill or anything else. It means being vibrant, energetic, thoughtful, smart, talented, secure, confident...and many, many more things.
I'm brought to this post by some articles I've been reading about the over 50 woman, and about Moms online, in general. How do the two relate, you're wondering? Well, many women over 50 are Moms...and Grandmoms. Somehow, Grandmoms get the really short end of the stick, and we can talk about that some other time.
Today, I'm interested in noting - to those of you who would market to women online, or offline, or in Second Life (which I am learning more about) - that the over 50 woman is a group you should be looking seriously at - for almost anything but especially for her connections. Because, she is connected... across platforms and across worlds.
Here's the rub- the world thought we were going to go away when we turned 50. Fifty, they thought, is old. Women don't like being old...and at 50, they are old, so...let's turn our attention to the 18-34 year olds. Let's look at the Moms...Moms being a relative term in today's world - some Moms don't start until they're 34!
We know from research like that at eMarketer that Moms are the key-decision makers in the family. What gets lost is the fact that just because Mom is now an empty-nester, and over a certain age, doesn't mean she's stopped being that key decision maker. She's still at it, folks. And, she's also the one her daughters are tapping into - for advice on raising babies, buying furniture, signing up for membership sites online, even how to use Facebook (did you know that women over 55 are among the fastest growing demographic online using Facebook?).
And, we're the women doting on our grandchildren. We're the women taking up new causes, climbing mountains because now we have the time and money for it, we're the ones starting new businesses in record numbers (sometimes with our significant others, sometimes with our daughters!) and we're the ones who vowed never to grow old. I'm here to tell you - we kept that vow. We're not old or over the hill...we're happy and we know it.
In fact, we're so happy, we're telling the whole world. On Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. On blogs and in emails and on major media sites that let us comment on stories. We're so happy, we're embracing the new technology of the 21st century with open arms. And that means - we are now connected to more people than you are.
No, really. We are. Keep neglecting us in your marketing and sales and guess what - we'll do the same for you.
