Regardless of who you are, you have fear. Fear can be gripping and often hold you back from pursuing your goals both professionally and personally. So it comes as no surprise that financial worry is one of the leading causes of chronic stress, sleep disturbances and relationship problems.
For instance, if one or both of your parents constantly complained about money and worried that they would not have enough, you may have developed a belief system that money is scarce and hard to come by. Therefore, you may hang on tight to your money and rarely take risks.
To start understanding where your fears originate, make a list of the negative beliefs you have about money, such as:
- Money does not grow on trees.
- Money is the root of all evil.
- I’m not made of money!
Now that you have written those old thoughts down, think about how they have influenced the choices and behaviors in your career, relationship and personal life. You may think it only affects your bank account, but in reality, without those negative beliefs, you might have made very different choices.
- Have you chosen or stayed in a career you do not love because of your fear of money?
- Have you stayed in a relationship because of your fear about money?
- Have you stopped doing things you love because you are afraid you will be without funds?
I am not invalidating your choices; I am just suggesting you take an honest look and see how those beliefs have the power to affect your entire life.
The good thing is that you can shift your money thinking. And this can be one of the most powerful steps in accessing an abundance of wealth.
I’m not suggesting you quit your job and begin spending money frivolously once you decide to make financial changes in your life. You should continue to work and take baby steps towards your new career and new life, before jumping into the unknown without a life jacket.
If you expect and know opportunities are open to you, you will hesitate less to take risks and put yourself out there. And the more you put yourself out into the world and take daily action toward your goals, the more opportunity you will find.
Like Mahatma Gandhi says, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Gandhi believed in the power of our thoughts, beliefs and actions. What he is saying is, change starts within you, not outside of you.
Become the embodiment of what you want to see outwardly and your circumstances and your world will change for the better. If you want to change your world, it is not about fixing someone else or controlling an outer circumstance; the change begins within you.
