This time of year is the second largest consumer spending event for retailers known as "Back- to-School", trailing only the Christmas holiday season. Total spending is expected to reach $30.3 billion this year from families with children in grades K-12. Then if you add in college spending it is estimated to reach $83.8 billion. This spending covers just about every type of consumer business: from office supplies to clothing to even dental and medical professionals. So it has a major impact of many types businesses.
My youngest daughter graduated from college this past year, so you would think I no longer would be part of this spending event, however she is going on to attend veterinary school in the fall so we've had to help pay some expenses. This included $900 on rabies vaccine shots! Yeah, can you believe the cost of this? Anyhow, it's now the second half of July and we're in the full swing for "Back to School" marketing and advertising campaigns. Here are a couple of Dollar General BTS promotions that we just launched on Monday. Both are part of Dollar General's Honoring Every Day Heroes campaign.
The Back to School Gold Star Rewards Instant Win Game is sponsored by Unilever.
It honors teachers and offers a chance to instantly win a Gold Star
Reward of either a PC Tablet or a $25 Dollar General Gift Card.
Participants can come back and play the game once a day up till August
18 for chances to win. A total of a 100 Tablets and 300 gift cards will
be given away during the promotion.
The Spell Hero, Be a Hero Instant Win Gameis sponsored by Georgia-Pacific, specifically for their Brawny brand. It offers consumers a chance to instantly win Dollar General Gift Cards. If the game spells "H-E" the player wins a $10 gift card, if it spells "H-E-R" they win a $25 gift card and when it spells "H-E-R-O" they win the top prize of a $50 gift card. This game also invites consumers to come back every day to play for a chance at one of these 2,000 gift cards. There is also a downloaded Dollar General Coupon for $.50 off a Brawny Paper Towels.
Georgia-Pacific is also donating a $1.00 every time someone plays (up to $10,000) to the Wounded Warrior project.
WWP’s purpose is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the
needs of injured service members, to help injured service members aid
and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and
services to meet their needs. The game landing page features four
actual"Wounded Warriors" and invites players to read their stories, such
as Mark Lalli who was on a joint training exercise with the U.S. Air
Force back in 2007 when their aircraft had an unrecoverable malfunction.
There were 11 on board, but only five survived. Mark was one of the
lucky ones but he suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI) as well as over
two dozen broken bones.
Dollar General is also featuring back to school sales each week continuing through September 14. Additional savings are available to Facebook users and those who “like” the Dollar General Facebook page. Also starting on August 1 a new Dollar General Facebook application will allow fans to “ride the bus” to additional discounts off everyday low prices on items both in-store and online. Plus they are inviting consumers to be a Hero by helping students in their own community by donating school supplies that they can drop off at a local Dollar General store.
